Welcome to Dive Gear Reviews, a comprehensive guide to scuba diving equipment. Scuba diving is an expensive pursuit, so looking up reviews for a particular article of equipment is a wise precaution before investing any hard-earned money in it. However, consumer reviews may or may not be written by an experienced diver, and magazine reviews could be suspect due to the advertising ties of the publication in question. Dive Gear Reviews provides cross-referenced reviews assembled by an expert, making it possible to see at a glance what multiple sources said about a particular piece of scuba equipment. If one magazine loved a scuba regulator or a dive computer, but the consumers hated it, that information will be found here.

Mares Avanti Superchannel Scuba Fins

Written by Dive Gear Reviews Editor. Comments Off on Mares Avanti Superchannel Scuba Fins Posted in: Below $100, Fins

The Avanti Superchannel from Mares is of a similar design to the Aeris Mako, namely a paddle fin with the big rubber section in the middle. This both improves the channeling of water down the paddle and the flexibility of the overall fin. Scuba Diving loved the Superchannel, giving it both a Tester’s Choice and a Best Buy award in 2007, and that magazine described it as putting out slightly above average performance in terms of power and maneuverability. Consumers thought highly of the fins as well, with LeisurePro users giving it a 4.5-Flag rating. Mares makes this fin in both open-heel and full-foot formats, with both formats available in black, blue, red and yellow. From a travel point of view, the fins are a bit shorter and wider than the typical paddle fin, and weigh in at just shy of 2 lbs (0.9 kg). The only downside on these fins is a minor one, namely their negative buoyancy. However, they come at a price tag cheap enough that losing them isn’t excruciatingly painful.
