Welcome to Dive Gear Reviews, a comprehensive guide to scuba diving equipment. Scuba diving is an expensive pursuit, so looking up reviews for a particular article of equipment is a wise precaution before investing any hard-earned money in it. However, consumer reviews may or may not be written by an experienced diver, and magazine reviews could be suspect due to the advertising ties of the publication in question. Dive Gear Reviews provides cross-referenced reviews assembled by an expert, making it possible to see at a glance what multiple sources said about a particular piece of scuba equipment. If one magazine loved a scuba regulator or a dive computer, but the consumers hated it, that information will be found here.

Hollis DG-03 Dive Computer Review

Written by Dive Gear Reviews Editor. Comments Off on Hollis DG-03 Dive Computer Review Posted in: Dive Computers, Over $500

The DG-03 was a much anticipated release by fans of Hollis’s line of dive computers, since it took the general ethos of the company’s basic dive computers and added air integration, a feature usually only available with high-end, high-performance data crunchers. The system has air, nitrox, gauge and freedive modes (the latter is a big plus for scuba divers who also snorkeler, spearfish, etc.). It can handle three pre-programmed gas mixtures, as well as allowing the user to adjust those gas mixtures in mid-dive. The DG-03 uses the fairly conservative Pelagic Z+ algorithm, and this can be adjusted to a more conservative stance by the user. Finally, the DG-03 boasts the aforementioned air-integration.

In field testing, programming the DG-03 was reported as somewhat counter-intuitive, but accessing data during dives proved no problem. This drawback is common to highly functional computers with only a few buttons for controls, but should pose no problem since a diver programs her computer on dry land for the most part, when the manual is right there for reference. Computers that are hard to use underwater are what divers should watch out for, and the DG-03 is not one of those.
