Welcome to Dive Gear Reviews, a comprehensive guide to scuba diving equipment. Scuba diving is an expensive pursuit, so looking up reviews for a particular article of equipment is a wise precaution before investing any hard-earned money in it. However, consumer reviews may or may not be written by an experienced diver, and magazine reviews could be suspect due to the advertising ties of the publication in question. Dive Gear Reviews provides cross-referenced reviews assembled by an expert, making it possible to see at a glance what multiple sources said about a particular piece of scuba equipment. If one magazine loved a scuba regulator or a dive computer, but the consumers hated it, that information will be found here.

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Atomic Aquatics Venom Dive Mask Review Posted in: Between $101-$250, Dive Masks

Updated September 27, 2013 Dive masks rarely cause a big buzz in the scuba community, but the Venom from Atomic Aquatics has managed to do just that. Cheapest Scuba Gear

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Cheapest Scuba Gear Posted in: By Price, Dive Gear Tips, Scuba Product Guides

Updated February 18, 2013 “Cheap” sometimes means “low quality,” but this list focuses purely on the least expensive scuba gear than meets with a minimum working standard. These aren’t “best buys,” which reflect the bargain hunters maxim of getting the most for your money, even if it means paying a little more. Instead, this list […]

XS Scuba Surface Marker Buoy Rescue Kit Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on XS Scuba Surface Marker Buoy Rescue Kit Review Posted in: Below $100, Other Accessories

Ever since the film Open Water premiered, surfacing to find yourself all alone in the deep blue sea has become every diver’s nightmare. Despite that persistent dread, few divers bother to buy their own safety sausage, which is silly when you think about it. A safety sausage is cheap, easy to use and clips unobtrusively […]

The Multi-Tool from XS is basically a Leatherman for scuba divers, and therefore a must-have item for dive shop owners, staff and any diver who maintains his own gear and likes diving independently. It’s easy to see where an auto hobbyist might want the XS Scuba multi-tool as well. The tool has three hex nut […]

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Mares I3 Dive Mask Review Posted in: Below $100, Dive Masks

Updated January 21, 2013 Mares has joined the bandwagon of aping Apple and prefixing one of their products with an “i” (they aren’t even the first in scuba gear — Aqua Lung has its Dimension i3 BCD) with their I3 dive mask. The “3” in the I3 refers to the 3-window lens, which adds a […]

Dive Movie Review: “Sanctum”

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Dive Movie Review: “Sanctum” Posted in: Below $100, Book and Film Reviews

Last year’s big dive movie was Sanctum, and on paper it was a very promising film. If the idea of a 3D movie about a cave divers struggling to overcome disaster and survive wasn’t hot enough, the involvement of James Cameron’s film tech should clinch the deal. Alas, Sanctum promised a lot and made only […]

Body Glove EXO 7mm Scuba Wetsuit Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Body Glove EXO 7mm Scuba Wetsuit Review Posted in: Between $251-$500, Wetsuits

The EXO 7mm is Body Glove’s high-end “semi-dry” suit. The suit is made from Body Glove’s Magna-Flex, a soft, lightweight and stretchy type of neoprene, and put together with triple-glued blind-stitching. For extra waterproofing, the interior seams are permanently taped. However, this attention to the seams is easily counterbalanced by the equal lack of attention […]

Oceanic B.U.D. Dive Computer Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Oceanic B.U.D. Dive Computer Review Posted in: Between $101-$250, Dive Computers

The B.U.D. from Oceanic is sport diving’s first dedicated back-up dive computer. You clip the B.U.D. onto one of the rings on your BCD, where it collects data just like your primary dive computer and tracks your status. There the B.U.D. remains, hanging unobtrusively on your BCD, until you need it due to a primary […]

Bare 7mm Elastek Full Wetsuit Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Bare 7mm Elastek Full Wetsuit Review Posted in: Between $251-$500, Wetsuits

The Bare 7mm Elastek Full wetsuit is one of two extreme exposure suits in Bare’s Elastek line. It should not be confused with the 7mm Elastek Semi-Dry wetsuit, which has markedly superior seals. By contrast, the 7mm Elastek Full is a fairly straightforward wetsuit. The “Elastek” in the title refers to the type of neoprene […]

Oceanic Ultra 7mm Scuba Wetsuit Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Oceanic Ultra 7mm Scuba Wetsuit Review Posted in: Between $101-$250, Wetsuits

The 7mm is the thickest and warmest wetsuit in Oceanic’s Ultra line. In terms of cold water exposure suits, however, the Oceanic Ultra 7mm is far from the warmest 7mm wetsuit around. However, the suit does offer serious bang for the buck. The Ultra 7mm uses the combination of thick and stretchy neoprene panels, typical of […]

Scuba Capsule Dive Gear Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Scuba Capsule Dive Gear Review Posted in: Between $251-$500, Dive Computers, Underwater Cameras

Scuba diving is a sport long on gear, but short on gadgets. Excepting dive computers, the sport is full of valves, hoses and nozzles rather than electronics. Even dive computers, with their dot matrix digital read-outs, are usually clunky and functional rather than sleek and laden with geeky features. The Scuba Capsule changes all of […]

Mares Prestige 12S Scuba Regulator Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Mares Prestige 12S Scuba Regulator Review Posted in: Between $251-$500, Scuba Regulators

The Mares Prestige 12S regulator offers a winning combination of quality, performance and a low price tag. Safety is a very real concern with cheaper regulators, but as the name implies the only thing down-market about the Prestige 12 is the cost. The Prestige 12S uses a time-tested balanced-diaphragm first stage, and many of the […]

Pocket Weights Dive Gear Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Pocket Weights Dive Gear Review Posted in: Below $100, Other Accessories

The Pocket Weight reviewed here is a slide-in weight with a molded handle, specifically designed to serve as the main ballast for the integrated-weight systems that are commonplace with BCDs today. The company makes an excellent point when it says that while integrated-weight BCDs have been around for 20 years, the weights used by those […]
