Welcome to Dive Gear Reviews, a comprehensive guide to scuba diving equipment. Scuba diving is an expensive pursuit, so looking up reviews for a particular article of equipment is a wise precaution before investing any hard-earned money in it. However, consumer reviews may or may not be written by an experienced diver, and magazine reviews could be suspect due to the advertising ties of the publication in question. Dive Gear Reviews provides cross-referenced reviews assembled by an expert, making it possible to see at a glance what multiple sources said about a particular piece of scuba equipment. If one magazine loved a scuba regulator or a dive computer, but the consumers hated it, that information will be found here.

Oceanic Cyanea Dive Mask Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Oceanic Cyanea Dive Mask Review Posted in: Below $100, Dive Masks

This mask from Oceanic/Aeris combines a minimalist frame with maximalist lenses to create a highly touted field of view. These start with those big lenses, but don’t end there. The lenses are tilted to increase downwards field of view, adding to the range of vision. At the same time, it is a low volume mask […]

SEAC L70 Dive Mask Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on SEAC L70 Dive Mask Review Posted in: Below $100, Dive Masks

The SEAC L70 is a new entrant into the growing realm of micro-masks, or masks with an ultra-low interior volume. “Micro” is the right word, because this one is so small you might mistake it for a kiddie mask. Low interior volume has two potential payoffs, one major and one minor, and both are present […]

Sherwood Onyx Dive Mask Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Sherwood Onyx Dive Mask Review Posted in: Below $100, Dive Masks

The Onyx looks like a basic dive mask: it is a dual lens design that comes only in black. However, the skirt is super soft and form fitting, providing a no-leak fit for a wide range of facial profiles. The design is also low-profile, and thus low volume. The buckles are a simple affair, and […]

Subgear Steel Dive Mask Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Subgear Steel Dive Mask Review Posted in: Below $100, Dive Masks

The Subgear Steel dive mask is sometimes referred to as the “Apnea Steel” mask, and for good reason. The mask has a very low profile and minimal interior volume, something that helps freedivers, since it reduces the need to exhale air through the nose and into the mask at depth. For a scuba diver, this […]

Best Dive Masks

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Best Dive Masks Posted in: Dive Gear Tips, Dive Masks, Scuba Product Guides

Updated July 1, 2013 Dive masks are at least as essential to diving as a regulator and an air tank, yet they might very well be the most overlooked piece of gear in the kit of many a scuba diver. Without the mask, you can’t see much of anything underwater. However, few divers invest much […]

Updated March 19, 2013 Most scuba divers acquire and replace equipment on a budget, and some budgets are more expansive than others. While most divers shop on either the basis of the best gear for the least cost, or even the lowest cost outright, some divers enjoy much more expansive budgets. Also, non-divers are often […]

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Atomic Aquatics Venom Dive Mask Review Posted in: Between $101-$250, Dive Masks

Updated September 27, 2013 Dive masks rarely cause a big buzz in the scuba community, but the Venom from Atomic Aquatics has managed to do just that. Mares I3 Dive Mask Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Mares I3 Dive Mask Review Posted in: Below $100, Dive Masks

Updated January 21, 2013 Mares has joined the bandwagon of aping Apple and prefixing one of their products with an “i” (they aren’t even the first in scuba gear — Aqua Lung has its Dimension i3 BCD) with their I3 dive mask. The “3” in the I3 refers to the 3-window lens, which adds a […]

Aeris CompuMask HUD Dive Computer Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Aeris CompuMask HUD Dive Computer Review Posted in: Dive Computers, Dive Masks, Over $500

Some divers swear by wristwatch computers, while others prefer consoles. The Aeris CompuMask does away with both formats, and integrates dive computing into the dive mask through the use of a magnified LCD panel. The system turns a dive mask into a cutting edge Head-Up Display. If you’ve ever wanted to play the Terminator, with […]

Aqua Lung Pacifica Dive Mask Review

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Aqua Lung Pacifica Dive Mask Review Posted in: Below $100, Dive Masks

The Aqualung Pacifica is a porthole-style dive mask, but it is not old-fashioned. Some divers appreciate the look and feel of a porthole mask, while others insist the mask’s big, single window has better viewing qualities. The Pacifica builds on that with the modern feature of a purge valve. Some divers consider the mere idea […]

How to Care For and Maintain Your Dive Mask

Written by Editor. Comments Off on How to Care For and Maintain Your Dive Mask Posted in: Dive Gear Tips, Dive Masks, Scuba Product Guides

Dive masks are your portal into the underwater world, and once a mask fits well it becomes almost an extension of the body. This might explain why most divers don’t devote as much maintenance to their masks as they do their regulator or BCD, despite its critical importance to the underwater experience. Many simply dunk […]

How to Clean and Defog a New Dive Mask

Written by Editor. Comments Off on How to Clean and Defog a New Dive Mask Posted in: Dive Gear Tips, Dive Masks, Scuba Product Guides

New dive masks invariably come coated in a thin layer of oil. The manufacturer puts this oil on the mask to protect the silicon skirt, helping to retain its flexibility and full color while the mask is on the display shelf. The problem is that this oil retains moisture, so only a little of it […]

Product Guide: How to Fit and Buy Dive Masks

Written by Editor. Comments Off on Product Guide: How to Fit and Buy Dive Masks Posted in: Dive Gear Tips, Dive Masks, Scuba Product Guides

Because the fit is so important, Dive Gear Reviews urges you to not buy dive masks from an online retailer. You really do need to go to a brick and mortar store and try a new mask on in person, and preferrbly buy the very same mask you tried. No online discount is worth the risk of buying a mask that fits poorly.
